What is Buttress Thread Gauge?

Buttress thread form, also known as buttress thread form or plug thread form. Is an asymmetrical thread profile with square and beveled sides? These are commonly used on lead screws where the load is primarily unidirectional.

Properties

• The buttress thread form is designed primarily to handle axial thrust applied in one direction. The load-bearing thread face is perpendicular or slightly inclined (typically 7° or less) to the thread axis.
• The resulting thread form has the same low-friction properties as the square thread form, but with approximately twice the shear strength due to the longer thread base.
• This thread form is also relatively easy to machine on a thread milling machine, as opposed to the difficult square thread form.

Parts of Buttress Thread Gauge:

• Gauges for buttress threads: Recommended gauges and measurement methods for male and female threads are defined in the ASME B1.9 standard.
• Allowance: Tolerance (play) is required on all male threads to facilitate assembly of the parts.
• Large diameter: The maximum thread diameter is the diameter of the male thread crest or female thread root.
• Small diameter: Minimum thread diameter. The root diameter of an external thread or the crest diameter of an internal thread.
• Thread root: There are two choices for thread roots. These are rounded, flat roots.
• Rounded root: At the root of the male and female threads, equal radii are formed tangential to the load and relief flanks.
